Hope for Gavin and awareness of Tay-Sachs disease.
The Newkirk family--Ron, Melinda, Trevor and Hannah, along with Michael MaKinde and Victoria Ferrante will run the Carlsbad half-marathon on January 18, 2015 to raise funds for Gavin Marquez and awareness of Tay-Sachs disease. As we run, we will be ever so aware of each enduring stride, each muscle strain and body fatigue and we will endure the 13.1 mile race in honor of the struggle and courage of Gavin's daily life and be conduits of hope for his future.
My friend, Jan, her family and son, Gavin have been living a painful, agonizing and unbearable journey for the past nine years, yet they pledge never to give up hope. When Gavin turned 3 years old in 2008, major signs of regression began and continue today. Currently, Gavin is the only known case of Tay-Sachs disease in San Diego, California and may be the first documented Filipino child afflicted with this devastating disease.
Tay-Sachs is a rare, genetic disorder that progressively destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. To learn more about Tay-Sachs, go to: www.curetay-sach.org. To learn more about Gavin's story, go to: www.hopeforgavin.com
Please join us in supporting the Marquez family as they continue to hold onto the hope of life for their son and others suffering from this disease and ultimately finding the cure to Tay-Sachs disease.
